Individual Counseling
Individual Counseling is one on one, personal counseling sessions with the counselor. Students are referred to the counselor for various reasons by parents, peers, faculty, and staff. Individual Counseling is available year round, and we always make ourselves available for students who need this service.
Confidentiality:
Students are told upon entering a session with the counselor, "What you say in here stays in here, UNLESS you tell me that you are going to hurt yourself or someone else. Also if you tell me that someone is hurting you or someone else, then I will have to tell someone."
We understand that you may want to know everything your child says in a counseling session, however, we try to uphold our confidentiality and trust with your child unless they are in harms way. We do our best to keep our parents very informed about the progress of the sessions, improvements being made, homework assignments given to the student regarding counseling, and whatever treatment plan we are incorporating in the sessions.
There are several ways to make a referral:

Referring Out:
As school counselors, we are limited on our time with students. On average we usually see students once or twice a week for 4 weeks. In some cases we may see a student once a week for the entire semester, depending on the particular case. However, we do not generally see students long term. If a student is in need of long term counseling for particular issues that need more attention than we can give, we will call a parent and refer to an outside agency. Of coarse, it is at the parent's discretion whether or not they seek additional, outside counseling.
